Installation view at AiRV Grand Finale – Melbu, Norway

The composition is inspired by how electric particles from the sun collides with the atmosphere of the earth and becomes visible to the human eye as shapes and colors dancing over the sky.

The video works in two ways: it can be watched while listening to the piece, but since human eye is the most sensitive to the green light, it works even with the eyes closed! The movement of projected green light creates a sensation of seeing moving northern lights.

still from the video

“Nordlyset” is originally composed for a dome of 47 speakers, during a 4-week long work stay at ZKM | Center for Art and Media using higher order ambisonics – a 3D sound panning technique.

Ambisonics is easy to adapt to various speaker setups, depending on the amount and placement of the speakers in a particular space.

Did you know that there is a space center on Andøya? Read more about it here!
